I cant imagine him ever being cool.  I remember when he was always bragging about something, was that the period you mean?  He was always bragging, it was odd.  He would brag about things that most people don't even think brag-worthy.  "See how I bought that?  How I greeted that guy?" he would brag.  At least when he started weights there was something that you could compare to.  Oh and he wouldn't talk so much either, I heard he crushed his larynx one time.
